Yesterday, as I was driving to work, two separate drivers cut me off. One was visibly upset. At what, I do not know, but he was obviously in a hurry. The other was blatant in his disregard for the rules of the road, not wanting to wait for his turn at a long intersection currently under construction. As I began to complain to myself, I heard the Spirit of God ask me if it would be such a big deal to spend a little more time in the car with Him rather than get where I was headed faster by a car length. As I prayed, I realized I did not want to be that one lacking grace in a world filled with angst.
This is a common occurrence in the Florida town in which I live. I daresay it is in your town, as well. This is a slight offense, and nothing compared to what has transpired in our nation over the past several days, as our hearts have been broken over the loss of a good man for no other reason than being faithful to his calling. But as Christians, what should our behavior be? It is a question little addressed from the pulpit, because frankly, people do not like to be told how they should act. One of the driving forces of the American economy has been the Protestant work ethic, but what about Christian ethics in general? Does the Word of God have anything to say on the issue? The answer is an emphatic “Yes!” Over the next several days, join me as I dive into the book of James. I think we can find a little bit of wisdom for everyone.
